Ingredients & Baking

  • Do you use sourdough starter in your breads?

Yes! All our sourdough breads are made with a living starter and are naturally leavened. Unlike some other commercial bakeries, we do not use dough conditioners like vital wheat gluten – a baker’s shortcut – to improve the rise or structure. We let Mother Nature do the work!

  • What are the benefits of natural fermentation?
    • Improved Digestibility: The low pH of sourdough bread, combined with its long fermentation time reduces the amount of gluten, making it easier to digest than other breads.
    • Supports a Healthy Gut Microbiome: Acts as a prebiotic, which means that the fiber helps
feed the “good” bacteria in your gut
    • Lower Glycemic Index: Sourdough has a lower glycemic index than many other bread types, meaning it causes a slower, more gradual increase in blood sugar. This can benefit those who are managing blood
      sugar levels
    • Rich Flavor and Texture: The lactic acid bacteria and naturally occurring yeast in sourdough develop complex, tangy flavors and a chewy texture unique to naturally fermented bread

  • Do your breads contain artificial flavors, colors or preservatives?

No—our breads are made without artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Because we do not use preservatives in our bread, this leads to a shorter shelf life than some other bread options in the commercial aisle at the grocery store. To keep your bread fresh for as long as possible, we recommend storing any loaves you won’t eat within several days in the freezer.

  • Is your bread organic?

We offer a select assortment of USDA Organic breads, including Sandwich Breads, Sliced Breads, and Heat & Serve Breads.

  • What’s a mother?

A sourdough mother (also called a starter, mother culture, or levain) is a living mixture of flour and water that’s naturally fermented by wild yeasts and beneficial bacteria. Think of it as the “heart of sourdough baking”. Every loaf starts with a mother, which gives sourdough its rise, flavor and unique character.

Availability & Storage

  • Where can I buy izzio breads?

You can find us in many major retailers and specialty grocers nationwide. Use our Store Locator to find a location near you or visit shop.techwerkz.shop to place an order online for nationwide shipping.

  • How should I store my bread at home?

Since our bread is baked without preservatives, we recommend enjoying it within a few days of purchase. If you need more time, we offer these suggestions:

    1. Store the bread on your counter in the plastic bag to seal in freshness for several days. If you need more time, we recommend freezing.
    2. Freeze your loaf in this bag for up to one month from the date of purchase. We recommend not refrigerating your bread.
    3. Thaw bread at room temperature or place frozen slice directly in the toaster or oven. Do not refreeze loaf after thawing.
    4. Refresh the bread in a toaster or oven to bring back the baked fresh goodness.

Pro tip: Very dry bread can be re-hydrated by dabbing water on the crumb (that’s the inside of the loaf, not the crust) before refreshing.

  • How do I prepare my Heat & Serve bread?

While izzio Heat & Serve breads are ready to eat, for the most enjoyable experience and most delicious, flavorful and crusty bread please follow these steps:

    1. Pre-heat oven to 400˚F
    2. Remove bread from bag and place on middle oven rack
    3. Bake for 7-10 minutes or until crust is golden brown (For frozen bread, bake 14-18 minutes)
    4. Remove bread from oven and let cool, then enjoy!

If not planning to bake bread day of purchase, then freeze and enjoy later.
Every oven is different, our baking instructions are meant as a guideline only; your oven may need more or less time.

    Heat & Serve Baking Tip

Prior to baking, mist inside of oven with 2-3 spritzes of water. Added humidity will gently awaken the bread, making it more lush, voluminous and create a golden crackly crust. Don’t have a spritz bottle? No worries, just run your hands under the faucet with cool water and gently pat the bread before placing it in the oven.

  • I bought my bread from shop.techwerkz.shop. Will my bread arrive frozen?

For ultimate freshness, we freeze our bread after baking. We pack your breads frozen, and thawing may happen during the 2-day maximum delivery window. It’s completely normal and safe for your bread to arrive partially thawed or fully thawed! You may experience some condensation within the box, which is also completely normal and safe. We recommend freezing any bread that you aren’t able to enjoy within the first few days of delivery.
